PRINCIPLES OF COMPOSITION |
The building blocks for creating meaningful photographs have remained unchanged since light was first "imprisoned" by Louis Daguerre more than a century and a half ago. Form and content must unify to produce a meaningful and compelling composition. In this workshop, the principles of photographic composition will be discussed. We will address such topics as frame dynamics and shape; graphic and photographic elements; composing with light and color; visual design basics, including rhythm, balance, and visual weight and energy. |

FALL Details TBD |
CRITIQUING PHOTOGRAPHS |
In this workshop we will learn how to critique photographs. We will heighten our understanding and appreciation of photography by analyzing photographs that span the history of the medium. We will review iconic as well as vernacular photographs that are representative of key periods in photographic history, including pictorialism, modernism, and postmodernism. We will discuss how a photograph’s meaning is influenced by subject matter, medium, process, form and context. Among the questions we will address are: What constitutes a good photograph? Why are some photographs deemed art and others not? And what criteria should be used to judge a photograph? By the end of the workshop, participants will have an expanded vocabulary and knowledge base that will enable them to more effectively describe, interpret, and evaluate photographs. |

CRITIQUING PHOTOGRAPHS |
In this workshop we will learn how to critique photographs. In so doing, we will heighten our understanding and appreciation of photography by analyzing photographs that span the history of the medium. |
